Xerox Mobile Scanner: Portable And Efficient Scanning Device

The Xerox Mobile Scanner may just be what many business travelers need — a portable device that can turn their printed documents to PDF or JPG files ready for sending out wirelessly to a PC, mobile device or the Web in a few seconds. In addition, it does not need a computer or electric connection to do the job.

Xerox claims that this $250 battery-powered sheet-feed scanner can deliver 300 scanned pages before it needs another recharge. Aside from the rechargeable battery, the scanner comes with a carrying case, a USB cable, and an AC adapter.

The Xerox Mobile Scanner may be the most efficient portable scanning device in the market. Weighing only 1.5lbs and measuring only 11.5 inches long, it can send scanned copies over Wi-Fi. Other similar devices connect via USB, thus requiring a computer to process the scans.

It does not need a pre-existing Wi-Fi network either. With an Eye-Fi SD Card bundled with the scanner, it can store images and function as a Wi-Fi adapter as well.

Announcement: Xbox Live Gets A Huge Update

The next Xbox Live update would include apps from some of Microsoft’s partners. It would have content from HBO Go and Comcast’s video-on-demand. The two companies were the first new partners who signed up with Microsoft when it announced changes to its Xbox Live user interface.

The content deals were made last October and Microsoft staggered the updates that included its content partners over the last couple of months. At present, apps from Verizon, Vevo, Epix, YouTube, and Vudu are already found on the game console.

In February, HBO co-president Eric Kessler said that Xbox Live would start offering HBO Go on April 1, just in time for the season premiere of the hit show Game of Thrones. But observers pointed out that the release date was unlikely because Microsoft usually rolls out Xbox updates on Tuesday and that didn’t coincide with the Sunday premiere of Game of Thrones. It was also unlikely that HBO would want to have users download the app the same day that the premiere will be shown. That would result into bad user experience if things didn’t go as planned.

While HBO’s inclusion in the update is not a surprise, it is not the same with Comcast. It has been criticized because people complain that it violates net neutrality rules and compete against other streaming services such as Netflix or Hulu Plus.

Opinion: Xbox 720 Won’t Block Used Games Says GameStop

There are rumors that Microsoft’s next generation home console would block gamers from playing pre-owned games. According to the rumors, Microsoft would implement technology into the console so that it makes a one-to-one relationship between the console and a game disc.

But one man doesn’t believe that the software giant will place such technology in its upcoming gaming console. GameStop CEO Paul Raines said that it would be unlikely that the next generation Xbox would have such technology because it hasn’t been proven to work yet.

With the technology, a consumer who played a game then sold it to GameStop and someone bought the pre-owned game, the third person would not be able to play it since it was already registered to the first owner’s console. This would also mean that you can’t take the game to a friend’s house to play it, unless you bring the Xbox as well. Or if your original Xbox was broken and both a replacement, you can’t play your old games with the new console.

Raines is one of the people who doesn’t want such technology to work. His company, GameStop, is the number one video game retailer in the United States and it sells second hand games.

Hot News: BBC iPlayer Launches On Xbox Live

With the likes of Sky Go, 4oD and LOVE FiLM already featured on Xbox LIVE, it was only a matter of time before the BBC iPlayer finally joined up. What’s really great is that it is completely free to use and doesn’t require a Gold subscription at all!

Xbox 360 users have been waiting quite some time for this day to happen, years in fact, and they now have access to BBC content via their Xbox. The launch, which brings all of the same TV content from the website-based version, won’t feature BBC radio for a little while. However, the BBC have confirmed that an update will bring BBC radio to the Xbox service later in the year.

As well as finally being available on the Xbox, the iPlayer interface has been given a brand new interface, which will be compatible with voice and gesture controls through the Xbox Kinect.

The BBC’s head of on-demand Daniel Darker says: “As we continue our work to make BBC iPlayer as simple as possible, we’re also excited to experiment with natural user interfaces made possible with Kinect, including voice and gesture control.”

“We believe it’s early days for these experiences, but see a great future working with partners such as Microsoft on innovations like these.”

It has been said that the BBC iPlayer feature should be available to all UK users within the next week.

Robotic Support Brings Freedom To Paraplegics

A research effort is underway by Turkish scientists to create a device that could replace the 100 year old wheelchair.

The Tek Robotic Mobilization Device is a small robotic device that helps paraplegic people to move around in a standing up position and setting up in gear without the need of others.

In upright position with correct posture, user can perform many normal actions that could not be done in seating position. The device also allows to lower the body safely to reach objects located near the ground level.

From the Tekrmd Web site, the developers show Yusuf Adturkoglu, a young man who was paralyzed, using the new device to resume normal activities and independence.

Crucial Standing Assistance

Instead of entering from the front like a normal wheelchair, people using the Tek RMD enter from the back of the device. That way they don’t have to hoist themselves with a momentum that can be dangerous and is next to impossible to do alone. By attaching a thick padded strap around the hips, Yusuf maneuvers himself into the Tek RMD on his own. The device uses a suspension system that balances the weight so he can stand up with just a gentle pull. Standing for an hour or more every day is important for people who have lost movement in their legs; without the weight-bearing effect of standing, they can develop cardiovascular problems, brittle bones, pressure sores not to mention the psychological importance of eye-to-eye interpersonal contact.

Independence

In the video, Yusuf calls the device to his bedside with a remote-control, gets himself out of bed, goes grocery shopping, maneuvers around a bookstore, and even does some things in the bathroom that we thankfully don’t observe to completion. But these these abilities that most of us take for granted every day are key to the emotional well-being of paraplegic people. The ability to squat down and easily come back to standing is key.

And while standing, Yusef’s hands are free to carry groceries or do whatever else he might need them to.

Smallest Dimensions

The makers of Tek RMD says it’s the most compact device of its kind, which allows Yusuf to navigate crowded grocery aisles, libraries, and who knows, Coachella, maybe? All without knocking into the people and things around him. Users still need ramps in place of stairs, but the device eliminates the need for special bathroom stalls and other facilities that allow space for bulky wheelchairs.

Among the new features and updates for the Firmware are enhanced page turn speeds with the recognition of taps for page-turning. Kobo has also added a function that enables the home screen to recall the user’s choice in the carousel.

Do You Believe? Printer Paper Can Be Cleaned And Reused With Lasers

Cambridge scientists have managed to create a hand-held device that removes printer ink from old documents so that the sheet of paper can be used again.

According to what we’ve been told, the hand-held device features a laser that is able to simply remove old toner from pieces of paper, that have been printed on, to an almost-new and instantly re-usable piece of paper.

The Cambridge scientists worked on the device with the Bavarian Laser Centre and tested a total of 10 different laser setups to find the best working device.

Once the toner had been removed, each sample was analysed and studied to determine how much toner was remaining and how much of the paper was damaged.

Dr Julian Allwood, who is the head of the Low Carbon Materials Processing Group at the University of Cambridge, had this to say:

“What we need to do now is find someone to build a prototype. Thanks to hand-held scanners and laser-jet printers, the feasibility for reusing paper in the office is there.”

According to reports from the university, if we re-use paper instead of recycling it, we’d save an additional 20 per cent in emissions.

MWC 2012: Motorola MOTOACTV Hands On – Sporty Fitness Watch With Android

If you’re looking for a Sony Smart Watch alternative, one that also offers some fitness functions, then look no further than the Motorola MOTOACTV. We had some hands on quality time with the product at MWC 2012 and the result was the video preview below. This is quite a thick smart watch, that doesn’t provide phone calling features, but what it does support is syncing with an Android handset and receiving the texts from the smartphone. There’s also media playback and the ability to track down the user via GPS.

MOTOACTV was present in Barcelona, at MWC 2012 at the wrist of some joggers and cyclers, showing off the gadget’s features. The touchscreen seems pretty bright and easy to use, but the real test would be using it in direct sunlight. The product costs around $249 in the 8GB version and it can also be seen as a remote for your handset and a fitness accessory, rather than your standard media player/phone replacement. Here’s the specs list:

Dimensions: 35 grams weight, 9.6 mm thickness

CPU: 600 MHz

Connectivity: GPS, Bluetooth, USB, WiFi

Display: 1.6 inch, touchscreen

Battery: Li-Ion, 258 mAh, 20 hours of playback

Memory: 8/16GB

This watch is dust and water resistant, it measures the calories that the user consumes and it can even update the jogging stats and such figures on MOTOACTV.com, with support for syncing. It can measure the miles you run, the steps you take and other sport routines that you do. This looks much like an iPod nano with a wrist strap turning it into a smart watch. Moto claims that the device is compatible with iTunes and Windows Media Player, so syncing your tunes won’t be a problem.

Samsung's New WB750 Takes You Further And Faster Than Ever Before

The Samsung WB750 is a relatively cheap compact camera that features a 12.5MP BSI CMOS sensor, ensuring that you’ll be able to shoot excellent stills or HD video even if you’re not the most photography savvy person around. The WB750 also lets you snap 10 megapixel photos whilst recording in full HD video, which isn’t a feature we’ve seen too much of in cameras nowadays. Let’s take a closer look…

The Samsung WB750 retails for around £150, which, for the impressive snapshots you can take and very good 1080p video, we believe to be an absolute bargain.

Inside the box, you’ll receive a few items including a quick-start guide, wall adapter and microUSB to USB cable.

The Samsung WB750 arrives with a sleek black colour scheme, which looks absolutely brilliant. When combined with the bump texture of the hand grip on the right-hand side, the two contrasting sections work brilliantly together. The WB750’s design reminds me more of my DSLR camera, with the grip on one side, but without all of that hand cramping weight to it!

There’s quite a range of buttons and ports on the WB750. On the top you’ve got the shutter button, the dial for switching modes, the power button and also the built-in microphone. The front of the camera just features the lens and the flash. The Samsung logo is also featured on the grip.

If we turn the camera around you can see the 3.0-inch display that takes up two thirds of the camera. On the right of the display we have the record button to begin video recording, the menu button, playback button, as well as the standard flash, macro, timer and display buttons.

The bottom of the camera, like always, is where we have the tripod mounting hole and also the battery compartment for the battery and SD card.

The side compartment is where you’ll find the microUSB port and HDMI port, for hooking up to your PC and HDTV, respectively.

Testing and Performance

Setting up and using the Samsung WB750 was a very simple task, and even though the software isn’t extremely advanced, like the software seen on the Samsung MV800, the overall layout of the menus and options allow for anyone to be able to use the camera efficiently.

There’s a range of different options in the settings including the ability to change the photo size, quality, ISO, white balance, face detection and more.

As well as the still photo settings, you’ve also got the settings for the video recording. You can change the movie size (E.g. VGA > 480p > 720p > 1080p) and also the microphone settings.

You’ve also got settings for the volume and various sounds that are made when pressing certain buttons. These can be turned on or off. As well as this, you have the display settings for controlling brightness, date and time, power settings and also the grid lines.

The last panel is the settings panel for changing other features such as the language, auto power off, time zone and a few other options.

The Samsung WB750 allows you to also take very impressive 3D photos that can be viewed by hooking the camera up to a 3D HDTV. This features allows you to view your still shots and panoramic shots with amazing 3D depth.

Datamation Systems, the company behind the original iPad charging cabinet, has introduced the Power Pad 16, which provides power for 16 iPads or iDevices at once, without the need for bulky power strips and the AC adapter bricks of the standard chargers.

This compact charging solution uses the iPad’s USB cord to plug into the sleek and portable base station. It’s definitely a more elegant solution than some of the other designs that we’ve seen multi-chargers use, such as the Griffin Multidock, which can only accommodate 10 iPads at once. Datamation’s larger storage cabinets are table-top charging solutions that can charge between 20 and 40 iPads, but like the Multidock, they are not easily transported.

The Power Pad 16 is light and small, and can easily be placed inside of a cabinet, cart, or carrying case. It can also be mounted on a table, a wall, or under a counter, offering many different multi-charging solutions.

According to Joe Mazza, Datamations Systems’ Vice President, the Power Pad 16 has been used in retail environments where it is necessary to charge many iPads and other Apple devices in the least possible space. The Power Pad has had a positive reception with retail outlets, and the design is also able to eliminate jumbled up wires and cables.

Although it’s designed for Apple products, it will also charge other USB-powered devices like smartphones and cameras.

The Power Pad 16 is currently available from major computer sellers or directly from Datamation Systems, for $699.90. For more information, visit the Datamation website.
